Cracked Gists

  1. Widely considered one of the greatest films ever made, The Godfather was a major turning point in racial stereotypes of Italian Americans, Marlon Brando's crippling obesity problem and the phenomenon of people lying about what classic movies they've actually seen.

  2. Grandparents of the Jersey Shore cast commit constant murders based on two principles that are supposed to make all that homicide ok: stay loyal to your family, and don't sell drugs. Al Pacino pulls an Anakin Skywalker by turning evil for the sake of the plot, Marlon Brando acts like he is in a lung cancer PSA. Celebrated by a generation of future gangsters who may have missed the point.

  4. The break-out film of Francis Ford Coppola's directorial career, The Godfather is the tragic story of a trio of abused wives. Two generations of American women have been inspired and empowered to run for the hills, become total sluts, or descend into Stockholm Syndrome, depending upon whether they were "a Kate," "a Connie" or "a Momma."

  5. In a nutshell depending on what age you see this film you will either turn into a womanising drunk, a criminal kingpin or one of many failed film students that try and capture the ambiance of one the most overquoted movies of all time.

  6. The heart-wrenching story of a WWII Marine (probably responsible for dozens of deaths during the biggest, bloodiest armed conflicts in the history of the human race) who is suddenly forced to shoot some guy in a restaurant. This naturally robs him of his innocence and puts him on the path of crime and violence.

  7. What you need to know: - The one with the horse head scene. - The only one with Marlon Brando, no matter what your friend told you. - Sonny has a massive dong.

  8. A truly terrifying morality tale of immigrants from the Old Country relocating to America, this set the Gold Standard for the ganster flick. Not since the days of Pontius Pilate has it been this painful trying not to laugh at some two-bit Italian hood's ridiculous speech impediment.

  9. A cautionary tale exploring the downside of running a family business. After patriarch Vito Corleone is laid up, his five kids get involved in various hi-jinks. Michael grows a pair; Connie marries a guy that just isn't in to her; Fredo deals with middle child syndrome; Sonny wishes FasTrak had been invented and adopted son Tom tries to hold it all together.

  11. This critically acclaimed masterpiece, about the aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty who transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son primarily because every other candidate dies, graciously gives young "film makers" a way to prove their intellect, while simultaneously creating the "if you don't like it, you didn't understand it" genre.

  13. Though regarded as one of the best character studies in film history, this cinema classic was originally conceived as a way for Francis Ford Coppola to finally make some goddamn money, and to preemptively prove that there is no way that guy you're going to call Nicolas Cage in 30 years could possibly be related to him.

  14. One of the Greatest American Films ever made, this classic film explores everything from how to land an acting job in a movie to why you should not buy oranges in a street market in an alley to the dangers of stopping at toll booths. The Godfather gives a quick look at how living in post World War II America could have you shot, stabbed, beaten, shot, kidnapped, strangled, stalked or shot at any given moment.

  16. Created from a novel generally regarded as pulp trash, this movie is now regarded as a classic, mainly by the simple choice of omitting the plotline about vaginal reconstruction.

  17. A movie about the rise and... rise of the 2nd generation of the Corleone crime family. People have sex, people get killed, people get killed having sex and one guy gets shot IN THE EYE!!

  19. Marlon Brando listens to Luca Brazi at his daughter's wedding, who hopes her first child is a masculine one. He, Brazi, goes on to sleep with the fishes and Brando is almost gunned down while buying fruit outside his office. Al Pacino didn't want to be involved in La Cosa Nostra, but he must murder a rival Capo and dirty police captain while on a dinner date with them. He succeeds in saving Brando from lead poisoning but, like Superman, couldn't stop Brando's defective body from crapping out.

  21. Whether you're asking Marlin Brando for a secret favor on the day of his daughter's wedding or waking up next to a decapitated horse, The Godfather will absorb you, molest you, make you feel important for seeing it, and then spit you back out again where it will kick your brain in the face with its unrelenting manliness.

  22. A deep and haunting masterpiece, The Godfather made people realise the importance of the little things in life: Nasal voices, Lung Cancer, Excessive hand-gesturing, don't let anyone go to the loo while eating out, don't beat your pregnant wife to a shitpile if her brother is a mob psychopath(and if you do-don't sit in the front seat.) etc. The movie also broke new ground by showing that huge dongs and even larger vaginas may not always be relevant.

  23. Proof that making a film that the mafia loves will ensure your success in Hollywood, the Godfather nears four decades of disappointing kids who rented it for the horse head scene, anyone who had already seen Scarface, and all DVD generation movie buffs who go by rottentomatoes.com only. Featuring Al Pacino actually pretending to be someone else and Marlon Brando in his first feature role, the Godfather tops the list of book-based films that improve plot by removing subplots about giant penises.

  24. An old guy has a few kids and a lot of friends that everyone is afraid of the old guy even though he can barely stand up under his own power, and someone realizes this and kills him ... or he chokes on a ham sandwich, I didn't really pay attention. Anyway his son takes over the family business of ... inconvenient decapitated animal head storage? The son goes into his new office and plans the companies next business venture, inconvenient bullet storage.
